چکیده

The Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway Drilling Project was begun in 1991 under the auspices of the U.S. Continental Scientific Drilling Program. It was intended to be a multidisciplinary study of Cretaceous carbonate and silicicl.tic rocks in cores from bore holes along a transect across the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. The study focuses on middle Cretaceous (Cenomanian to Campanian) strata that include, in ascending order, Graneros Shale, Greenhorn Formation, Carlile Shale, and Niobrara Formation. The transect includes cores from western Kans., eastern Colorado, and eastern Utah. The rocks grade from pelagic carbonates containing organic-carbon-rich source rocks at the eastern end of the transect to nearshore coalbearing units at the western end. These cores provide unweathered samples and the continuous depositional record required for geochemical, mineralogical, and biostratigraphic studies. The project combines biostratigraphic, paleoecological, geochemical, mineralogical, and high-resolution geophysical logging studies conducted by scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey, Amoco Production Company, and six universities.

The climate of the Late Cretaceous: New insights from the application of the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer to Western Interior Seaway macrofossil

We apply the carbonate clumped isotope thermometer (D47) to macrofossils from the Baculites compressus ( 73.5 Ma) and the Hoploscaphites nebrascensis ( 67 Ma) ammonite zones of the Western Interior Seaway (WIS) of North America, and nearby coeval terrestrial and open marine environments. The carbonate clumped isotope thermometer is based on a single-phase isotope exchange equilibrium that promo...

The first reported ceratopsid dinosaur from eastern North America (Owl Creek Formation, Upper Cretaceous, Mississippi, USA)

Ceratopsids ("horned dinosaurs") are known from western North America and Asia, a distribution reflecting an inferred subaerial link between the two landmasses during the Late Cretaceous. However, this clade was previously unknown from eastern North America, presumably due to limited outcrop of the appropriate age and depositional environment as well as the separation of eastern and western Nor...

Sharks that pass in the night: using Geographical Information Systems to investigate competition in the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway.

One way the effects of both ecology and environment on species can be observed in the fossil record is as changes in geographical distribution and range size. The prevalence of competitive interactions and species replacements in the fossil record has long been investigated and many evolutionary perspectives, including those of Darwin, have emphasized the importance of competitive interactions ...

Baculites (Ammonoidea) and the age of the Pierre Shale in the eastern Raton Basin, south-central Colorado

The Pierre Shale is a marine deposit that accumulated in the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway during the onset of Laramide tectonism in the southern Rocky Mountains region. In the eastern part of the Raton Basin near Trinidad, Colorado, ammonite biostratigraphy suggests that the base of the Pierre Shale lies within or slightly above the Lower Campanian Scaphites hippocrepis III ammonite range...

Relative sea level history of the uppermost Cenomanian of southwestern Utah: evidence for Milankovitch−driven eustasy?

Many aspects of Late Cretaceous eustasy, including timing, amplitudes, and forcing mechanisms, remain poorly understood. Recent studies suggest a possibility of Milankovitch forcing of the Cretaceous "greenhouse" eustasy (e.g. Plint, 1991; Fischer Hinnov, 2000; Gale et al., 2002), but stratigraphic data, which would exceed, in their temporal resolution, the constraints given by biostratigraphic...
